Twitter Helps Inglourious Basterds to $37.6 Million Weekend Box Office

There seems to be a growing belief in Hollywood that Twitter is becoming an increasingly important component of box office success. The so-called “Twitter effect” either sees a movie’s opening weekend numbers increase or decrease on Saturday and Sunday based on the 140 character reviews coming out from early viewers on Fridays.

The Twitter effect supposedly sank Bruno’s box office numbers and last weekend, was credited with improving sales for District 9.

Now, another apparent winner: Inlgorious Bastards, which won this past weekend’s box office with $37.6 million in ticket sales. Hollywood Reporter’s Risky Biz Blog declares the movie the “Twitter Age’s first true success story.”…
